FADS and History

There would never be fashion without so called fads. Although most of these fad quickly fade away, a lot have stayed, and are still seen in current fashion. History definitely repeats itself.

In the 1920's, the Flapper look was a fad. It has been a debate whether or not it should be called a fad, because although it was quickly replaced by the Elvis look in the 50's. it remained to be part of the Fashion timeline. Today, a lot of young actors are wearing flapper style clothes, case in point:

The 1960's fashion quickly faded when the Beatles showed up. The 60's were filled with colorful shirts, chunky clogs, the peace sign and the Smiley face. That is something to smile about. Since then, these fads became a fashion staple, staying in the Fashion circuit until today. Once it was called Hippie. Now they call it Bohemian.

Come the 70's The Brady Bunch ruled TV, bell bottom pants were in, and Diane Keaton introduced the "Woman-wearing- Male suits" look in Annie Hall. Until now, many designers are using these fads in there designs. See: one of Gianfranco Ferre's latest creations.

The 1980's introduced Neon to the world. Hairspray was a fashion staple, and guys started to wear earrings. Our men started wearing one earring before. Now they wear more jewelry than there female counterparts. Mohawks were associated with rebellious teens, and Madonna was the queen of fashion. She still is.

The 90's filled fashion magazines with hip-hop fashion. The world quickly adopted baggy jeans and beanies. Macarena was danced everywhere, but not everyone understood what the song meant.

And now the 00's. American Idol, High School Musical, Youtube. Film and fashion magazines dictate everyone what to wear, and how to act. There are a lot of "blasts from the past", clothing styles reinvented to be more "MODERN." Crocs and low rise jeans are a staple. Men became metrosexuals. Everyone seems to be in love with David Beckham.

Whether we like it or not, fads are here to stay. No matter how fast fads come and go, an essence of them remains in fashion. It may change, or remain the same, but indeed, in Fashion, History repeats itself.
